Paragliding In Nepal

Nepal forms a rectangle on the southern slopes of the Himalaya and is arguably the most stunning country imaginable. The main area for paragliding is the Pokhara valley from where commanding views of three of the world's 8000m peaks can be had. The weather conditions are friendly and and more or less constant, which is excellent for paragliding.

Tandem flying involves a pilot flying with a passenger. Both have separate harnesses that are attached to each other and the wing. Paragliding harnesses are built for comfort and safety. They feel more like an armchair than a flying device. Once launched, the passenger just sits back, relaxes and takes in the epic scenery. Photography is no problem either. Due to the portable nature and easy launch characteristics of a paraglider (they fit into a rucksack) one can take them anywhere and fly them from most mountains in Nepal.

A twenty-minute jeep ride from Pokhara takes one to Sarangkot, the viewpoint 2000ft above Lakeside. From here spectacular views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu (all over 8000m) can be seen. Three categories of tandem flights are on offer here.

Phewa Tal View
In the morning and late afternoon these 15 minute flights give one a taste of unpowered flight, winging over Pokhara lake and then landing by a lakeside bar.

Cloud buster
This midday flight provides the thrill of high fliying as one rides the thermals up above Sarangkot in the company of eagles and vultures. After an invigorating 30-60 minutes one can land by the lake.

Cross-country
This option offers the visitor the chance to experience flying from one valley to another. Using thermals, clouds and birds as guides, one goes on an unforgettable journey north of Pokhara towards the big mountains. The trip lasts as long as one can stay airborne before returning to Pokhara later the same afternoon.
