TREKKING IN TIBET
Ganden to Samye Trek
This trip begins with a drive along the Friendship Highway to Lhasa or a direct flight from Kathmandu. There are stops at the major towns/settlements en route paying visits to Sakya, Tashilumpo, Palcho Monasteries and Khumbum Stupa. This, the first step of the drive, takes five days to reach Lhasa. Three days are allocated to Lhasa for acclimatization and sightseeing tours that cover the visit to the spiritual centers of Tibet: the Jokhang Temple, Sera and Drepung monasteries and the Potala Palace. The next five days are set aside for trekking, which begins with a 45 km drive to Ganden from Lhasa. There one can visit the monastery, one of the main centres of the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism. The trek involves crossing two mountain passes, both above 5000m, and the total trekking distance is 80 km. This trek has all the desirable qualities of the perfect excursion: elevation, moisture and adventure. Upon arrival at Samye, one can visit the one and only monastery that represents the Nyingmapa sect (red capped) of Buddhism.
