Trekking in Nepal » Annapurna Region

The Annapurna region, possibly the most popular trekking region in Nepal, offers the greatest variety of scenery, people, culture, flora and fauna. The Annapurna chain of mountains stretches 70 miles along the northern border of Nepal, with Annapurna 1, the 10th tallest peak in the world, rising to the lofty height of 8,091 metres. Superb views make the treks highly rewarding.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek, starting in Beshisahar and ending in Pokhara, circumnavigates the entire Annapurna chain and is generally regarded as the best of Nepal's classic mountain treks. The trail originates in the Marshyangdi valley, north of Manang, crosses the snow covered Thorang La pass (5430 m), passes Muktinath, an important destination for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims, before it returns to Pokhara via the Kali Gandaki River.

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, also known as the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, starts in Pokhara and passes through rice terraces, colorful Gurung villages, the word's deepest river gorge in the course of the Kaligandaki River, and ancient trade routes to Mustang, to reach high mountain glaciers. The trek culminates at a point surrounded by snow-capped peaks near the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre base camp area.

The Jomsom/Muktinath Trek (12 days) is a short trek in the Annapurna region. Muktinath is a holy place for Hindu and Buddhist devotees. The trail passes through ridges between Modikhola and Kali Gandaki, where both the terrain and the vegetation undergo sharp changes. The route offers breath-taking views of the Himalayas.
