Trekking in Nepal » Langtang and Helambu

A trekking tour in the Langtang and Helambu regions enables one to view the Nepalese Himalayas from west to east in totality. While the Langtang Himal and its several peaks bewitch the tourist on the one hand, the freshwater lakes of this region, such as Gosainkunda, Saraswatikunda and many other smaller ones situated heights of more than 4300m, provide them with a stark contrast on the other. Both Gosainkunda (Holy Lake) and the stories of its mythical origin have enriched both Nepalese religious traditions and legends.

This is why Hindus all over the world go on a pilgrimage to these lakes during the full moon of August and pay homage to Lord Shiva. These lakes have become the destination for romantic, sentimental, emotional and religious individuals. Moreover, this region presents a variety of possibilities regarding trekking tours. Since their altitudes and accessibility vary significantly, one can begin a trekking tour in this region from relatively low down and, as interest, stamina, and corresponding capacity increase, one can continue upwards to 5500m and above.

The Gosainkunda and Ganja La passes are among the more favoured ones for high altitude trekkers. The Langtang and Helambu region is the second largest conserved national park in Nepal. Enriched by more than 1000 different species of flora, it is also home to 150 different species of birds, and wild animals such as tigers, bears, deer, wild sheep, snow leopards and many others. It offers an ideal trek for those who do not have much time to spare, but wish to experience Nepal's unique combination of cultures and landscapes, while avoiding gruelling bus journeys.

A good level of physical fitness is needed to complete this trail although no previous trekking experience is essential.
